Other concerns and projects:
The DoLime Quarry is owned by River Valley Developments, a subsidiary of Carson Reid Homes. They removed over 400,000 tons of gravel in 2009, mainly by mining the aquitard: a critical layer of rock that protects the aquifer from which Guelph draws a majority of its drinking water. Many people are concerned that Carson Reid’s company has now broken through the aquitard. The quarry is now pumping thousands of litres per day out of the ground and discharging it into the Speed River to prevent flooding of the quarry. (From Wellington Water Watchers: http://www.wellingtonwaterwatchers.ca)
Clear-cutting on Victoria Rd: In June 2009, approx. 61 acres of trees were illegally clear-cut on land owned by Carson Reid, near Victoria and Maltby roads.
Drexler Construction
Drexler was awarded the contract for the culvert last summer, the project that was stopped by the occupation. They are continuing to bid on HCBP contracts. Most of the construction contracts in the City of Guelph are awarded to Drexler.
